Lemon Ginger Turmeric Tea

I have never really been a tea person to be honest! A friend recently shared this recipe with me (Thanks Pedro!) and it completely changed my mind. Now I make it sometimes twice per week! It's amazing hot, cold (but hold the ice as the taste is best without being diluted!) or also in a fun, gut healing Jello.

As an athlete, having something that supports recovery is always helpful. Lemon provides a big dose of Vitamin C, ginger reduces swelling and aids in digestion, turmeric also reduces inflammation, cinnamon is anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal while also supporting blood sugar regulation, honey is also anti-bacterial and anti-fungal, while also containing a hearty amount of antioxidants. If you decide to add gelatin and make these into jello or gummies, the gelatin works to prevent and repair damage to the gastrointestinal lining.

The recipe is simple! You'll need the following:

  • 4 Small roots of Turmeric

  • 1 Large root of Ginger

  • 1 Lemon

  • 3-4 Cinnamon Sticks

  • Raw Honey to taste (I use about 1/4 Cup)

  • Optional: 2 TB Gelatin - if making Jello

*Note: I also add more honey to the jello - as the gelatin makes it a little more tart*

How to make the tea is even more simple!

For Tea:

  • Add 2 Liters of water to a pot over medium heat

  • Slice ginger and turmeric so roots are exposed (no need to peel them - just make sure they are organic!) and add them to the pot

  • Slice Lemon in to 1/4-1/2 inch windmills and add to pot

  • Add cinnamon sticks to pot

  • Cover the pot and bring the water to a boil, then reduce to a simmer for 5 minutes

  • After 5 minutes, strain ingredients into a large bowl and allow to cool

  • While cooling, add in desired amount of honey, stir to incorporate

  • Enjoy warm, or pop in the fridge & enjoy when cold!

For Jello:

  • Add 2 Liters of water to a pot over medium heat

  • Slice ginger and turmeric so roots are exposed (no need to peel them - just make sure they are organic!) and add them to the pot

  • Slice Lemon in to 1/4-1/2 inch windmills and add to pot

  • Add cinnamon sticks to pot

  • Cover the pot and bring the water to a boil, then reduce to a simmer for 5 minutes

  • After 5 minutes, strain ingredients into a large bowl and allow to cool

  • Mix 1/2 Cup of Tea with 2 TB gelatin and allow to sit for 3-5 minutes

  • Add 3 + 1/2 more cups of tea to the tea and gelatin mixture, stirring well to combine

  • Add gelatin mixture to a 9x9 baking dish and let cool in the fridge for 4+ hours, until solidified

  • Cut into squares and enjoy
